Purpose

Viet Voices San Diego curated a one-night only immersive experience at the Mingei International Museum, where community members and allies came together to enjoy an array of cultural foods and to learn about cultural folklore, values, and identities from each member of our diverse San Diegan Asian-American community.

Sharing Our Roots Consisted of Five Components

From our diverse, intergenerational Asian-American storytellers, we heard stories highlighting the diverse range of their cultural identities and the experiences that had thus far shaped each of them.

Interactive Panel Discussion

Our panel of storytellers consisted of Asian-American women of diverse generations, origins of birth, cultures, ethnicities, and viewpoints. The panel discussion included questions from the audience. We heard about the storytellers' experiences navigating generational and cultural bridges. The conversation ranged from lighthearted and funny to introspective, and overall it was a healing and learning experience for all.

Cultural Identities

These stories allowed community members and attendees to delve into the rich cultural backgrounds of our Asian-American community members, shedding light on their journeys and the experiences around navigating both generational and cultural bridges

Folklore and Storytelling

The shared folklore and storytelling from different Asian-American communities allowed for the cultivation of a safe and engaging space that celebrated shared heritage and fostered meaningful conversations that brought us closer together.
